<image:caption>Hand caning is the traditional method of caning and has been around for centuries. By using individual strands of cane material, the caner achieves the final pattern by weaving one strand at a time. There are several techniques such as: Traditional, French, and binder hand caning. Cane patterns can vary in size and style. Hand cane pieces generally carry more value as they become more rare in the antique world.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sheet cane is the most frequently observed method for caning modern chairs. The cane comes in a large sheet which is then is cut to size and is pressed down or hammered into a groove around the perimeter of the chair seat. You can tell a sheet caned piece from a hand caned piece by the length of spline where the cane meets the wood of the chair. Sheet cane can be used for seats, backs, wings, canoe seats, radiator covers, or used as a decorative detail on cabinetry or bars.</image:caption>
